The scandal dominated American news and ultimately led to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. Colonial Mint captured that moment while it was still unfolding, making the Watergate Bug more than a modern historical commemorative—it is a period piece produced during the actual Watergate era.

The Watergate Bug is known among vintage art-bar collectors as Colonial Mint catalog number COL-12, with more than one design variety known to collectors.
