During World War II, nickel was an important strategic metal needed for the war effort. To conserve it, the U.S. Mint temporarily changed the composition of the five-cent coin to an alloy containing 35% silver. These historic coins are easily identified by the large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse—including the first use of the “P” mint mark on a U.S. coin.
