During World War II, nickel became an important strategic material for the war effort. Beginning in October 1942, the U.S. Mint temporarily changed the Jefferson Nickel's composition to an alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. Production of these special wartime nickels continued through 1945.

War Nickels are easily distinguished by their large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse. They were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, and the wartime series marked the first appearance of the “P” mint mark on a U.S. coin.
